In the meantime, you might find the following background onPiccadilly & Leicester Square to be interesting.

Piccadilly

Oddly, while the original name for this long street in the City ofWestminster is well known (Portugal Street), what is not so clearis where its current rather odd name comes from.
It is presumed to originate from a tailor who sold a stiff form ofcollar from a shop in the street in the early 17th century. Thecollars were called piccadills.

Piccadilly runs up to Hyde Park Corner at its western edge. Thisis famous as being close to the location of Tyburn and the infamousTyburn Tree – the triangular shaped gibbet where mass publichangings of criminals (by the standards of the past) wasconducted.

More pleasingly, it is also the location of speakers’ corner – alocation where by tradition people can set up a soapbox and sayanything they wish about anybody, providing that they are notprovoking violence. A great democratic tradition (thoughinterestingly, not specifically enshrined in law) it is still usedextensively today and listening to some of the odd speeches isenjoyable.
Both Lenin and Marx spoke here in their time.

The street runs eastwards and contains some interesting buildingsand expensive residential accommodation. It is here that you’llalso find the world-famous food shop of Fortnum and Mason.

Leicester Square

This charming and relatively small square is the traditional heartof London’s entertainment industry and is surrounded by cinemas, theatres, clubs and restaurants.

Commonly called The West End by locals, it was open fields untilthe early 17th century when the Earl of Leicester purchased theland here and built himself a huge palace (now gone).
As part of that, he also enclosed all the open land into hisgarden – an act that caused public outrage in the parish as part ofthe ground was considered to be common land and open to all.

Eventually a royal commission agreed with the people and part ofthe garden was opened up again as public land – that area istoday’s Leicester Square.
This part of London is now largely given over to recreation and isno longer considered to be a residential area of the rich andfamous.
